• Type I commissioned is ripped off and sold on a T-Shirt!

I'm actually strangely excited by this. House Industries doesn't seem to mind; they created the original type treatment for my "Typographreaks" opener in last year's FC Masters of Design issue. Check out the "homage" here.

  • 2009 American Society of Editors Awards

Fast Company was nominated for an ASME award in the prestigious General Excellence category. We have formidable competition (The Economist, GQ, Runner's World, and Wired), but what is it they say...it's an honor just to be nominated. Eureeka!

  • Typography Essentials: 100 Design Principles for Working with Type

Several of my layouts from O Magazine, Condé Nast Portfolio and Fast Company will be featured in Ina Saltz's newest book, to be published by Rockport this July. From their web site: "A deep understanding of letterforms and knowledge of the effective use of letterforms can only be obtained with constant observation and experimentation; it evolves over a lifetime of design practice and study. This book is intended to advance the progress of designers seeking to deepen their typographic expertise."

  • Society of Publication Design 2009*

This year I was awarded two merits for feature design. The first for a layout that ran in Condé Nast Portfolio ("The Pirates Can't be Stopped") and the second for "A Devilish Green Angel," a Fast Company feature.

  • Type Directors Club 2009*

Every month I have the pleasure of assigning the opener for our calendar section, NOW. I've been fortunate to receive some brilliant typographical illustrations and submitted six of the openers as a series to the Type Directors Club competition. The entry included work by Post Typography, Paul Sahre, Julie Teninbaum, Owen Gildersleeve, Omnivore and Kevin Van Aelst, and will be featured in the upcoming TDC annual.

  • PRINT Regional Design Annual 2009

I was psyched to see that a layout I had created for O, the Oprah Magazine ("Mint Condition") was included in this year's edition of the regional design annual. Unfortunately there was a credit snafu, which I can rant a little bit more about, if you're interested...

  • Typographreaks

For a feature about House Industries I commissioned an opener type illo from...drum roll...House Industries. The guys at House liked how it turned so much, they stuck it on a T-Shirt. Check it out here.
